Year 6 Communication Letter Spring Term 1

Year 6 Communication Letter
Spring Term 1

                  Friday 12th January, 2018
Dear Parents/Carers,
Happy New Year! I hope you all had an enjoyable (and restful) Christmas. The children have returned refreshed and ready for the busy term ahead.

Our topic this term is World War Two. The children will be exploring what it was like for an evacuee during this time; rationing and the impact this had upon individual’s lives and the role of women during the war. Please note, as part of this topic the children will also be learning about and discussing the Holocaust. Due to the sensitive nature of this topic I will be sending out an additional letter prior to this lesson detailing the information that the children will be exploring and will be inviting parents to come and discuss any questions or concerns they may have. Attached is a Topic Web outlining some of the areas of learning that we will be covering in class this half term.

Homework
Spelling- Children will continue to be given a list of spellings each week; these words are taken from the year 5/6 curriculum. The weekly lists for the half-term are in your child’s planner, enabling them to practise these at home. Spellings will be assessed each Friday.
Additionally, they should be learning and practicing the half-termly spellings which are included in this pack. These will be tested at the beginning and end of each half-term and scores will be sent home.
Maths- Children will continue to take home 10 number facts and/or calculation questions (including the answers), for them to learn by heart. These will be sent home each Friday and weekly tests will take place on the following Tuesday.
Current Affairs- Children will continue to express their views on a current article through a piece of writing. Children are encouraged to use the ‘checklist’ in the front of their Current Affairs books to help them to produce a piece of writing which meets the expected standard for Year 6.
Reading- Please continue to encourage your child to read at home and discuss books with you. Children should make a record of what they are reading, which pages and give a summary of that section in their homework planner.
SATs preparation- With SATs approaching, children may be set additional homework at various points throughout the term. These tasks will be for revision purposes to help prepare them for their assessments. Children will record details of these additional activities in their planners, including the date in which each piece is to be handed in.

Planners
These are a great way for children to take responsibility for organising themselves by recording key dates and information. They also act as a method of communication between home and school. Please ask your child to make me aware if you have written a message so I can respond promptly.

Physical Education
Children will continue to have two P.E. sessions a week; Wednesday and Thursday. They will have an indoor session (gymnastics) and an outdoor session (hockey). Occasionally, our timetable may change so please ensure your child has their P.E. kit in school each day. It would be useful for children to have both outdoor trainers and plimsolls (clean trainers) as part of their kit. As the weather remains cooler it may be beneficial for children to bring with them navy/black tracksuit bottoms and a black/red jumper. School P.E. kits should be worn for all sports clubs.

Staff
Mrs Sewell will teach the class on Thursday mornings. Mrs Seagers and Mrs Kelsall will provide both support in class and in the way of intervention groups.
